Why Cork?
I get pretty excited when I talk about cork. I think my engineering background gives me an even deeper appreciation for cork’s many unique and amazing properties.
Cork and the Environment
The cork used at Vivid Vision Bags is Portuguese cork that comes from the cork oak tree (Quercus suber). This tree is unique in that the bark can be removed every 9 years without harming the tree. Thus the harvesting process is sustainable. Cork oak trees typically live between 200-300 years.
Cork bark removal is performed by highly skilled workers, using only an axe. They are some of the highest paid agricultural workers in the world.
Cork is carbon negative, as the forests retain 20X more carbon dioxide than the processing of the bark emits.
No pesticides or fertilizers are used at cork plantations.
No cork bark goes to waste. Pieces not appropriate for wine corks or textiles are ground up to create items like cork boards or acoustic panels.
Why Cork Bags?
Cork is incredibly light and water-resistant.
Cork can be hand-washed in mild soap and water and does not require protectant like leather.
Cork keeps its shape well and has comparable durability to leather.
Cork has a luxurious look and feel, and each piece is beautifully unique.
Cork is vegan and PETA certified.
